Titan wanted to share a few tips on what we feel could help when getting ready to take part in a video call interview.
Interviews may look a lot different in the future, there is going to be an increase in video call interviews between organisations and candidates which still gives both parties the opportunity to introduce themselves and allow the organisation to make a fair judgement on whether or not you are the correct person for the role.
• Make sure your internet speed is stable and even use a wired connection
• Prepare! You can have notes in front of you so make notes, leave them out in front of you and use them
• Dress as you would for any interview
• Plan for peace and quiet! – No kids or pets running into the room
• Use your desktop if possible as this will be better quality than your phone. If using your phone its best to have it in a stand to keep both hands free
• Ensure that your laptop is positioned in such a way that you can see your full head and shoulders
• Consider your background – make sure it’s suitable – bookshelves have been particularly popular
• Ensure you’re lighting is suitable. You don’t want to be squinting in the sun but you also don’t want to be a silhouette
• Use a mic – don’t rely on the laptop picking up everything but make sure the mic isn’t sitting against your clothing as it will cause interference
• Be yourself, remember that you have secured this interview because the employer thinks you are a credible candidate for the role, so relax and let your personality come out naturally
Virtual interviews are no different to the interview process that we know, and in order to give yourself the best chance at the role in discussion you must act accordingly and prepare the exact same. The points highlighted above are general interview techniques that allow you to prepare in the best way possible to ensure you are comfortable and have no distractions.
