The Government have came up with a new idea on how to help parents who have given birth to a premature or sick baby, when this becomes available it will be called “Neonatal pay”

This is so that parents can get more time off work when a sick baby is born. As a big chunk of their time off to spend with their new born baby can be stuck in a hospital.

This new initiative will be so all parents with new born who need to stay in the hospital for reasons due to their baby’s health will be entitled to this. It has been estimated in the U.K that 100,000 new born babies are admitted into the neonatal units in hospitals and to prevent the parents of these 100,000 worrying about other things like work and money the government is trying to introduce this new rule to help the parents and family.

Conditions include a requirement for one or both parents to have started working for their current employer from around the time that the mother became pregnant (or, in the case of adoptions, 6 months before the adopter was matched with a child). In addition to meeting all of the eligibility conditions for Shared Parental Leave, to qualify for Statutory Shared Parental Pay, the parent(s) must earn at least the lower earnings limit (£118 a week in 2019-20) over an 8 week period.

Each parent must consent to the other taking their leave and pay and the consenting parent must confirm that they meet a low threshold work and earnings test.
