As it is approaching December and the first year of my apprenticeship is coming to a close, I recently took some time to reflect on my work portfolio across the year. When looking back, one campaign that stood out to me, was our #NoWrongPath video myself and Jim Gallagher made outlining his journey from when he left school till now and what advice he would give to the younger generation coming through.

When I re-watched the video we created, it gave me the encouragement to share my journey for those who may be in a similar situation or feeling the same as I did before finding Titan Recruitment. As a young adult it is common to put pressure on yourself to pass every exam you sit but it definitely doesn’t need to be that way. Speaking from experience, I struggled in school as I wasn’t the best academically and if I am honest all I wanted to do was kick a football.. so my main focus throughout my school years wasn’t performance in school or classes and because of this I felt such a pressure in fourth year when it came to sitting my exams and I will be honest I passed two out of the six I sat.

After leaving school at the age of 15 I ended up in and out of college programs until I found my previous apprenticeship in joinery where I studied towards a national qualification which was brilliant but I knew after a short time that this wasn’t a career I wanted to pursue. This was definitely a moment where I wished I had stuck in at high school and done my best in my exams to try help me get a better job role or into university.

Have you ever wished you stuck in at school and applied yourself that extra yard?

I am a great believer that you need to enjoy what you do every day and for myself I never noticed this until I had a lightbulb moment where I really knew within myself that I needed to make a change to better my lifestyle and enjoy learning again. This was when I was made aware of Titan Recruitment and QA who run my current apprenticeship program. Once I learned about digital marketing and what my apprenticeship would entail I was instantly interested and I had the same attitude when I met Jim for my interview. I knew Titan was a business I wanted to be part of moving forward.

Throughout the first year of my apprenticeship I would like to think I have made an impact on Titan with my ideas and with the support of QA, particularly Eve Chaplin, Brian McCarthy and Jim Gallagher who have supported me throughout and I have learned some essential skills that are helping me towards a national qualification that I can use throughout my life. Not too bad for a young guy who left school at 15.

Have you used a modern apprenticeship to kick start your career if so what did you study?

I am very thankful for the position I sit in today and I hope that there are other young adults who will use the apprenticeship program QA offer as it is extremely useful. Exams are not the be all and end all, they are important and great in many ways because they can get you into university and ensure you get a great job but I would definitely advise you not to put too much pressure on yourself to pass all of them with flying colours because there are other pathways to have a successful career. It took me 5 years to find mine but I would definitely say I am here now and I will be sticking around!

Carter Harrison.
